Winter in Glendalough

Discover the Magic of Glendalough in Winter: Golden Leaves, Tranquility, and Stunning Walks

Nestled in the heart of the Wicklow Mountains, Glendalough Hotel is a gateway to one of Ireland’s most enchanting landscapes. While summer brings its crowds and lively buzz, it’s the winter months that reveal Glendalough’s true, untouched beauty. Picture quiet mornings, frost-kissed landscapes, and serene trails—this is the perfect time to immerse yourself in nature’s embrace and reconnect with tranquility.

As autumn transitions to winter, the Wicklow landscape transforms into a canvas of rich golden hues and as it is quieter, visitors are treated to seeing more of our wild animals as they roam the hills. The forests surrounding Glendalough are sprinkled with fallen leaves, crunching gently beneath your feet as you explore the trails.

Beautiful Walks, All to Yourself

Glendalough’s network of trails caters to every kind of adventurer, from leisurely walkers to seasoned hikers. In winter, these paths take on a new allure, with fewer people around to disturb your journey. Stroll along the Green Road, which meanders gently through woodlands, or venture higher on the Spinc Trail for panoramic views of the valley and its twin lakes, shrouded in winter’s serene stillness. (Always check the weather and bring the right equipment before taking on any of the longer trails in Winter)

For history lovers, the Monastic City feels even more mystical during winter. The ancient round tower and stone ruins, dusted with frost, offer a poignant reminder of Glendalough’s timelessness.

The Glendalough Hotel is open at weekends in November and then we close for our winter break and re-open in December from the 27th. We have a great package for visitors on New Year’s Eve with music and 3 course Dinner in Casey’s Bistro that evening.

Imagine waking up in this magical place on the first day of 2025!
